About Unitarian Universalism

A Faith Built on Freedom, Reason, and Love

Welcome to a religion that celebrates your questions, honors your intellect, and invites you to bring your whole self.

Unitarian Universalism (UU) is a liberal, non-creedal religion. This means we do not ask you to sign a declaration of faith or check your doubts at the door to be part of our community. Instead, we are unified by our shared values and our collective commitment to personal and spiritual growth. We are a “living tradition” that believes truth and meaning are continuously unfolding, guiding us to grow and adapt over time.

What We Believe

Because we do not have a central dogma, you will find people of many faith backgrounds and philosophies walking this path together. Our congregations include Humanists, Christians, Buddhists, Jews, Pagans, Agnostics, Atheists, and lifelong seekers.

We believe that we do not need to think alike to love alike. Our community is bound together not by a forced agreement on what happens after death, but by a shared covenant of how we treat one another and the world during our lives.

Our Shared Values

As member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), we guide our communities by core values that honor the inherent worth of every person and our deep connection to the universe. We covenant to affirm and promote:

  • Inherent Worth: The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
  • Justice and Compassion: Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.
  • Spiritual Growth: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations.
  • Truth and Reason: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning, leaning on the guidance of reason and the results of science.
  • Conscience and Democracy: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.
  • Peace and Liberty: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.
  • The Interconnected Web: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Our Sources of Inspiration

Our tradition is rich and inclusive, drawing wisdom from a vibrant tapestry of diverse sources:

  • The direct experience of transcending mystery and wonder, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit.
  • Words and deeds of prophetic people which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love.
  • Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.
  • Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to love by loving our neighbors as ourselves.
  • Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science.
  • Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

Faith in Action

For Unitarian Universalists, deeds matter more than creeds. We believe that love is a verb, and our faith calls us to actively work for social justice, civil rights, environmental sustainability, and systemic equality. We strive to be a welcoming force for individuals of all races, ethnicities, national origins, abilities, ages, genders, and sexual orientations.

Come As You Are

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey – whatever your heritage, whoever you love, whatever your doubts—you are welcome in Unitarian Universalism. Bring your open mind, your compassionate heart, and your unique perspective to the table.
